Meet Freya

Hello! I’m Freya. I’ve been working in the museum sector since graduating from the University of Birmingham with a first-class degree in History of Art and Italian. Having started out in heritage engagement, I decided to utilise my digital skills to work more closely with communities and collections. Along the way, I noticed that museums were not always welcoming spaces; often steeped in colonial histories and bursting at the seams with outdated interpretation, I decided to specalise in decolonial practice, placing this at the forefront of all my work, and teaching others how to do the same.

When I’m not doing museum-y things, I’m out on my road bike, doing something creative, or off exploring (preferably somewhere hot!)

Experience

I currently freelance on a range of projects that focus on digital, decolonisation, and community engagement. Alongside skills in digital development, grant writing, and community outreach and engagement, I also have skills in curatorial practice and collections management that help to inform my freelance work.

My most recent freelance projects include creating the consultancy partnership Decolonial Focus, leading content development for Smartify’s museum and gallery partners, working as an Interpretation Specialist for Museums & Heritage Highland, and as a Digital Content Creator for Smartify and XpoNorth. As a closet art historian, I also write a mix of accessible and academic articles for my blog, The Art Wanderer.

Ethics

My approach to museum practice comes from the basic desire to treat everyone kindly, equally, and with respect. At it’s core, that’s what decolonisation is all about.

Motivated by anti-racism, I am on a mission to make museums more relevant, representative, and equitable spaces that can benefit everyone. Embracing the views of communities and cultures that too often go unheard inside the museum space, I encourage museums to relinquish their power and work collaboratively to start the decolonial process.
